It has been a really long time since I have posted on this site and that is because I DON'T SEEM TO TRAVEL ANYMORE!!!
Instead we have been working the Faranch in Texas which has been hard but rewarding and is in itself a whole other adventure. But finally, this July we got to go on an Alaskan cruise thanks to Cameron's parents celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary!
I had never been on a cruise and had never had any interest in doing one, however, I can now say that I had a wonderful time!
We left from San Francisco and there were 27 of us. It was such fun meeting every night for dinner, singing with the staff and eating all sorts of delicious foods… which you can do seemingly 24 hours a day on a cruise! With all the walking, because these ships are indeed floating cities, we did manage to stay our same weights (which were already up from too much Texas BBQ:)!
There is an endless array of activities on these ships; four pools, six hot tubs, an outdoor movie theater, around the ship walking deck (a running deck for Werner :), bands everywhere, daily lectures and nightly shows. We tried to cram in as many activities as possible and all were educational or entertaining.
The ports we stopped in were Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay, Ketchikan and Victoria. In each place the passengers could disembark and participate in some onshore activity (except the magical Glacier Bay). Cameron and I chose anything to do with the water since we now live so far away from any. We saw Humpbacks and Orcas, otters, seals and eagles, but unfortunately, no bears :( We hiked to mountain lakes and the Mendenhall glacier, kayaked to see eagles, and also just puttered around lovely historic cities that can only be accessed by sea or air. Others on the trip did train rides, zip lines, rafting, museums, flower gardens and of course, shopping!
The highlight of the trip was the renewal of marriage vows by Michael and Arlene… beautiful, inspirational and barely a dry eye in the crowd!
For me I can say what a treat it was to finally meet the part of Cameron's family from Chicago, great folks and so much fun!!
Thanks again to Michael and Arlene for making this event happen and to everyone who came for making it an enjoyable and memorable trip!
